Belgian Interior Minister: 151 Belgian Fighters Killed in Syria Since 2012

The number of Belgians killed in Syria since 2012 stands at 151, Interior Minister Pieter De Crem told Parliament.
According to the minister, 295 people are still there. According to the statistics, the majority of the radicalized people whose departure date to Syria is known left in 2013 (144) and 2014 (134). In 2015, this number dropped gradually to 56 in 2015, to four in 2016 and 2017.
In 2018, only one person took the road to Syria, compared to zero departures this year. However, the number of deaths has risen to 109 people against 15 in 2017, 11 in 2018 and 14 in 2019.
The minister, however, deplores the authenticity of the figures of the death announcements, as no on-site verification has been carried out. "Only two announcements have been attested by a Syrian doctor," the minister specifies.
He also admits that a number of Syrian fighters reported dead have subsequently been found alive, including the case of Abedallah Nouamane, currently incarcerated in a Kurdish prison in the city of Haska, in the north of the country.
