Belgian ISIS Fighter Seeks Repatriation from Syrian Prison to Face Trial at Home

Abdellah Nouamane wishes to be repatriated from Syria. The jihadist imprisoned in a high-security prison in Hassaké, confided to a VTM team his desire to return to serve his sentence in Belgium.
Two criminal lawyers, interviewed by RTL info, think that the wish expressed by the jihadist can be realized. Me Laurent Kennes explains that it has already happened that cases of people arrested abroad, for an offense committed abroad, which is also an offense under Belgian law, return to Belgian territory to be tried.
His colleague Me Guillaume Lys, on the other hand, brings some nuances. "In international law, the State responsible for the treatment of a suspect is the one on the territory where the facts were committed. Here, Syria and Iraq," he specified.
The probability, in view of all these explanations, remains low and therefore requires the agreement of Syria. Belgium could however intervene if the "fundamental rights" of the suspect are not respected, the same source said.
