Belgian Group Urges Support for Morocco’s Sahara Autonomy Plan

Several Brussels personalities from various backgrounds have launched a committee to support the autonomy plan for the Sahara proposed by Morocco.
Called Cobesa, the Belgian Committee for Support of Autonomy for the Sahara Region, this collective aims to encourage the Belgian authorities to take a position in favor of autonomy, under Moroccan sovereignty, of the Western Sahara.
More specifically, Cobesa intends to appeal to the Belgian authorities but also to organize awareness-raising actions, conferences and other debates on the issue, arguing that this position is the only guarantee to ensure peace in the region.
According to the initiators, it is time for Belgium "to take its responsibilities" and actively support the autonomy plan. "We are not pro-Morocco or anti-Algeria," clarified the president of the Committee, the socialist Hugues Bayet, specifying that Morocco’s proposal, which "is not to be taken or left" must be the subject of negotiations.
