Spanish Parliament Debates Sahara Self-Determination as Left-Wing Parties Push for Referendum

The federal spokesperson for Izquierda Unida (IU), Sira Rego, calls on the PSOE to seize the "golden opportunity" offered to it by Congress to return to "common sense" and support the self-determination referendum in the Sahara.
At a press conference, Rego expressed her party’s IU’s support and solidarity with the Sahrawi people, and hoped that the PSOE would return to the "common sense" that Spanish leaders have always shown by supporting for 46 years the self-determination referendum of the Sahrawi people. Spain has a historical responsibility in this conflict, she recalled.

The Podemos, ERC and Bildu parties will present, this Tuesday, to the Congress a bill aimed at ratifying the UN resolutions on the Sahara which call for a self-determination referendum. This proposal will be debated in the lower house and will be an opportunity for the PSOE to confirm its position on the Sahara, after the government of Pedro Sanchez announced its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan.
