Spanish Socialists Seek Compromise on Western Sahara Policy Ahead of Key Vote

The spokesperson for the PSOE parliamentary group, Hector Gomez, assured that his party will seek to negotiate an agreement with the opposition before the presentation to Congress, on Tuesday, of the bill by Podemos, ERC and Bildu on the self-determination of the Sahara.
The initiative of these parties aims to ask Congress to support the UN resolutions calling for a referendum on the self-determination of the Sahara, contrary to the socialist government of Pedro Sanchez, which has supported the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara, considered as the most "serious, credible and realistic" solution to the conflict.
The position of the Executive is "within the framework of international law and UN resolutions," said Hector Gomez, spokesperson for the PSOE parliamentary group in Congress, stressing that the government is seeking to contribute to a settlement of the conflict in the Sahara that has lasted for 46 years and to establish "a new framework of relations with Morocco based on mutual respect and international legality."
The PSOE will obviously seek "to find an agreement with the rest of the groups," said the spokesperson for the socialists in Congress, insisting that his party will always defend what it considers to be good for the country.
Gomez assured that the government is open to dialogue. The proof, he recalls, is that Minister José Manuel Albares and President Pedro Sanchez have already appeared before Congress to explain the government’s change of position on the Sahara.
