Barcelona Prodigy Lamine Yamal Sidelined: Morocco’s National Team Hopes Rekindled

Suffering from a left thigh iliopsoas injury, Lamine Yamal will not be able to play Spain’s upcoming matches against Scotland (Thursday in Seville) and Norway (Sunday in Oslo). Bad news for the young player of Moroccan origin, but it will likely give hope to Morocco, which hopes to see Yamal join the Atlas Lions.
Born in Spain to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, Lamine Yamal has the possibility of playing for any of the national teams of these three countries. The young Barça striker has already played for the Spanish youth categories (U17, U19 and U21) and has recently joined the senior team against Georgia and Cyprus. The 16-year-old player has been called up again by Luis de la Fuente for the matches against Scotland and Norway and would have definitively become a Spanish international if he had been able to play these matches.
But Yamal will not be able to participate in these matches because he is suffering from a left leg injury that forced him to leave the Spanish team’s gathering and return to Barcelona. The information was announced by Barça and confirmed by the Spanish Federation (RFEF), reports AS. According to FIFA regulations, a player with multiple nationalities can change his sporting nationality if he has not played more than three matches with a national team.
Lamine Yamal’s unavailability for these matches therefore offers the possibility for Morocco, which has always expressed its interest in the young player, to come back to the charge. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation had tried to convince the young striker to join the Atlas Lions. Without success.
