Ballon d’Or Winner Benzema Joins Saudi Champions Al-Ittihad

The 2022 Ballon d’Or, Karim Benzema, has signed with the Saudi club Al-Ittihad after fourteen years spent at Real Madrid. He will join the Moroccan Abderrazak Hamed Allah there.
Benzema’s departure, the second all-time top scorer and best passer in the Madrid club’s history, coincides with the rising power of Saudi Arabia on the club football scene. After the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in January, the Saudi championship welcomes another Ballon d’Or. Benzema, 35, has chosen to continue his career in the Middle East, committing until 2025 with Al-Ittihad, the current Saudi champion and home of Moroccan Abderrazak Hamdallah.
Benzema’s contract, which could extend until 2026, positions him as the highest paid athlete in history. The exact amount of the deal has not been revealed, but it is said to be astronomical. According to some sources, the Frenchman could receive up to 200 million euros per year, with extra-sporting benefits offered by the Saudi government, including luxury goods and tax exemptions.
Benzema’s arrival at Al-Ittihad is just another step in the ambitious project of the Saudi Pro League to become a coveted destination for the world’s best footballers. Other big names in football could follow, with rumors of Lionel Messi’s departure to the Saudi championship. It is also a showcase for Saudi Arabia’s candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup, in competition with that of Morocco.
