Asian Residents in Morocco Face Discrimination Amid Coronavirus Fears

Tuesday 10 March 2020, by Kamal

Asians residing in Morocco are going through a difficult situation in Morocco, due to the nickname of "Coronavirus" attributed to them by some Moroccan citizens.

According to the president of the league for solidarity with Asian immigrants, Hayat Berrahou, 3 cases have been reported recently in Rabat and Casablanca.

This discriminatory attitude in no way reflects the spirit of conviviality of a population that has coexisted with a multitude of foreign communities and welcomed tourists of several nationalities on its soil.

Reacting to this behavior that she describes as racist, the president said that "Moroccan public opinion should be aware that the two confirmed cases in Morocco are Moroccans and not Asians".

She also called on the country’s authorities and the press to raise awareness among citizens about the consequences of their discriminatory behavior towards Asian nationals.

Although it seems that these attitudes are legion in North African and Middle Eastern countries, Morocco should not encourage them, she said, especially since the country has made a lot of effort to improve the situation of foreign nationals.
