Arab World Rallies Behind Morocco in World Cup Clash with Spain

Morocco faces Spain on Tuesday in the World Cup round of 16. In addition to the many Moroccan supporters, the Atlas Lions can count on the support of all the Arab supporters present on site.
As the only Arab team still in the competition, after the elimination of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia, Morocco is benefiting from broader popular support. The country now seems to be carrying the mantle of the Arab world in the tournament, according to some observers.
During their recent performances against Belgium and Canada, Walid Regragui’s protégés were applauded by many Qatari, Saudi and Tunisian supporters. Similarly, their qualification for the round of 16 provoked an outpouring of joy throughout the region. The celebrations spread to the cities of Qatar. In Doha, the Moroccan community claims to feel at home.
"All the Arab countries felt the joy for us and helped us feel the joy," said Yassin al-Youssfi, an employee at a Moroccan restaurant in Doha, wearing the team’s bright red jersey. For his part, Ibrahim Boutahar, a Moroccan fan residing in Doha, said he had "the impression of being in Morocco! The atmosphere is Moroccan, the music... the rituals."
This wave of solidarity from other Arab and African countries is well perceived by Moroccan supporters who have remained in the country. For Kadr Ighiri, a resident of Casablanca, the support had given a boost to the team and would help them against Spain. The Moroccan players "have the impression of playing at home," he said, believing that "this is the key."
