Arab League Declines to Mediate Morocco-Algeria Crisis, Says Secretary-General

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, states that his organization is not willing to play the role of mediator in the crisis between Morocco and Algeria.
The conflict between Rabat and Algiers will not be the subject of any debate at the next Arab League summit to be held in Algeria in March 2022. The Secretary-General of the organization explains the reasons behind this position. "Since 1975, the Arab League has not intervened at the request of the two parties," said Ahmed Aboul Gheit in an interview with Sky News Arabia.
"They asked (the other Arab countries): stay away from this matter, because you will get your fingers burned," he added. In other words, the league will not take any steps towards the restoration of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Algeria.
In September, Algeria opposed any Arab mediation to find a solution to the tensions with Morocco. "The issue of the severance of diplomatic relations with Morocco is not and will not be on the agenda of the ministerial meeting, and the decision to sever diplomatic relations will not be the subject of discussion or deliberation. It is a sovereign, final and irreversible decision," said the Algerian Foreign Minister, Ramtane Lamamra, on the sidelines of the meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers and during consultative meetings in the run-up to this meeting.
