After his anti-Semitic remarks, Kanye West meets with Moroccan Rabbi Pinto to "take responsibility
After years of anti-Semitic statements and pro-Nazi provocations, the artist Ye, formerly Kanye West, seems to be initiating a reconciliation attempt. The rapper met this week in New York with the Orthodox rabbi of Moroccan origin Yeshayahu Yosef Pinto, a controversial but influential figure, to offer a form of apology.
In a video of the exchange, Ye thanks the rabbi for "welcoming him with open arms and allowing him to redeem himself", seeing this meeting as "the first stones of a new beginning". He calmly explains his past missteps: "I was suffering from various issues, including bipolar disorder, which sometimes amplified certain ideas to extremes."
"I am truly grateful to be able to sit here with you today and simply take responsibility," the rapper said. Rabbi Pinto, who is of Moroccan-Israeli origin and was appointed Chief Rabbi of Morocco in 2019, told him that Judaism "has brought to the world a path for anyone who regrets their faults."
This approach has been praised by rapper Nicki Minaj, but it is met with skepticism by many observers. Some internet users believe that Ye uses his mental health to absolve himself, while journalist Yashar Ali said he does not believe in his change. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, on the other hand, strongly criticized Pinto, accusing him of "legitimizing" a "demonic anti-Semite."
A heavy legacy of provocations by Kanye West-
This attempt at redemption comes after three years of statements that have shocked public opinion. Ye had notably declared that he wanted to go into "death con 3 on Jewish people", relayed conspiracy theories about the control of the media by Jews, and praised Nazism, which had cost him his partnerships with Adidas and Balenciaga.
The invocation of his bipolar disorder marks a change, as he had recently claimed to have been "misdiagnosed". Rabbi Pinto, known to be the spiritual advisor to many celebrities, also has a criminal record, having been convicted of corruption in Israel in 2014.
