American-Moroccan Referee Ismail Elfath Makes World Cup Debut in Portugal-Ghana Match

Ismail Elfath refereed the first Portugal-Ghana (3-2) match at the 2022 Qatar World Cup on Thursday, November 24. Who is this American referee of Moroccan origin?
The only American referee to have arrived in Qatar to officiate World Cup matches, Ismail Elfath made an impression during the Portugal-Ghana match. He awarded a penalty to Cristiano Ronaldo, which he converted powerfully into a goal. The Portuguese fell in the box after a slight contact with Mohammed Salisu.
Born in Casablanca, Ismail Elfath moved to the United States at the age of 18. He started his career as a fourth official in 2011. The following year, he made his debut as a main referee in MLS (professional soccer league in North America). Four years later, he moved up the ranks. Ismail becomes an official FIFA referee.
His career took off very quickly. He was selected for international competitions such as the FIFA Club World Cup, the CONCACAF Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the U-20 World Cup... His work will be crowned with success. Ismail Elfath has been named MLS Referee of the Year twice.
