AliExpress Expands Local Currency Payment Options in Five African Countries

The online shopping platform AliExpress, a subsidiary of the Chinese group Alibaba, now offers Moroccan buyers the possibility to pay for their purchases in Moroccan dirhams. An initiative aimed at facilitating payments and further securing transactions.
In addition to Morocco, payment in the national currency is also possible in Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia and Tanzania. The measure is part of AliExpress’ expansion strategy in Africa, where difficulties in settling purchases hinder the development of e-commerce. The integration of the local currency is intended to streamline transactions and eliminate additional fees that penalized consumers.
The adoption of the dirham should therefore limit the blockages carried out by certain Moroccan banks on international payments and increase the number of Moroccan online buyers who already benefit from an improvement in delivery times. Orders shipped to Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania are now delivered in ten days, a reasonable timeframe.
