Taghazout: Morocco’s Hidden Gem Transforms from Surfer’s Paradise to Eco-Chic Resort Destination

In Morocco, a seaside resort stands out clearly from the others for its relaxed and local charm. It meets the aspirations of tourists, both sports enthusiasts and surfers.
A former fishing village on the Atlantic coast north of Agadir, Taghazout has become over the years a trendy and eco-responsible seaside resort. In the 1960s, this Berber village attracted celebrities like Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones group, who made it their source of inspiration. "Taghazout has always been a popular destination," assures Francis Desjardins, CEO of Fairmont Taghazout Bay to National Geographic.
Taghazout is renowned for its surf beaches. An ideal seaside resort for adventurers and surfers. This village is experiencing a phenomenal boom thanks to an ambitious tourism project in Taghazout Bay, which aims to become the first sustainable seaside destination in the kingdom. It is home to a Hyatt Place resort and the luxurious Fairmont Taghazout Bay, which opened its doors in July 2021. It also has the Hotel Riu Palace Tikida Taghazout and the Hilton Taghazout Bay Beach Resort & Spa.
"At our opening, Taghazout was still unknown - a surf resort prized by backpackers and free spirits," explains Desjardins. Since then, we have witnessed a remarkable and conscious transformation, with shops, yoga studios, art galleries and high-end restaurants... but the soul of the village remains intact." In addition to surfing, tourists will now find in Taghazout vegan cafes, charming tea rooms and seaside tajine restaurants, as well as a multitude of new eco-friendly hotels and surf cabins and guest houses appreciated by the locals.
