Algerian Protesters Stage Mock Funeral for Bouteflika Amid Fifth Term Controversy
Sunday 3 March 2019, by
On Friday, the demonstrations against Bouteflika’s 5th term continued in Algeria with their share of images and coded messages. This time, a coffin, wrapped in a Moroccan flag, with a photo of the current Algerian president, could be seen.
During a demonstration bringing together a very large number of people, a new way of denouncing the "Oujda clan" that does not want to let go of power in Algeria could be seen. The symbolic burial of "Bouteflika the Moroccan".
A rather macabre scene, moreover: the coffin, the flag, the photo of Abdelaziz Bouteflika... Some media speak of humor or derision. The scene rather looks like a death threat. Or, at best, a wish or a prediction of imminent death. Funny?
Abdelaziz Bouteflika was born in Oujda 82 years ago. But this is not mentioned in his official biography. Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel is also part of the "Oujda Clan".
Last month, we saw protesters, particularly in Kherrata in the Béjaia wilaya, people shouting: "Oh Moroccan Bouteflika, no fifth term". Here it is a Bouteflika’s coffin with a Moroccan flag wrapped around it.
