Algerian Activists Rally at Border, Echoing Moroccan King's Call for Reconciliation

The multiple calls for reconciliation launched by King Mohammed VI, although not yet having a favorable echo with the Algerian authorities, galvanize the youth of this country. In this regard, to force the hand of the authorities, a peaceful gathering was held on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at the Algerian border post called "Colonel Lotfi", on the initiative of the "Algerian Committee for the Opening of the Land Border".

This peaceful sit-in is the initiative of Algerian activists, which once again demonstrates that the opening of the common land border is also an Algerian popular demand.

This decision, recalls Le360, was made in the wake of the speech on the 20th anniversary of the Throne, on July 29, 2019, where the King once again extended his hand to "brothers in Algeria" for a resetting of all the differences intentionally created by the neighboring regime, which, according to the King, continues to disregard the "ties of brotherhood, religion, language and good neighborliness that have always united the two brotherly peoples".

It should be noted that King Mohammed VI has always worked for this outstretched hand to his eastern neighbor to normalize bilateral relations. Moreover, in his last speech on the Green March, on November 6, 2018, the Sovereign had proposed the establishment of a "joint dialogue and consultation mechanism" in order to overcome the "conjunctural differences" hindering the development of bilateral relations.

Added to this is his message of congratulations addressed to the interim Algerian president, Abdelkader Bensalah, following the historic triumph of the Algerian national team at the 2019 CAN, celebrated, moreover, by many Moroccans.

Faced with all these attempts by the King, which testify to his willingness to open his land border with Algeria, we are witnessing total silence on the part of the neighboring country. The Algerian authorities must seize this opportunity and work for the common good by finally opening this border, which has been demanded since February 22, 2019, by its people, suggests the same source.
