Algeria Bans Moroccan Flights, Closes Airspace Amid Diplomatic Tensions

The Algerian High Security Council (HSC) decided on Wednesday to "immediately close" the air borders with Morocco, thus prohibiting Royal Air Maroc (RAM) from serving Algeria and aircraft from Morocco or of Moroccan registration, civil and military, from overflying its airspace.
The airline Royal Air Maroc (RAM) can no longer operate flights to Algeria, nor overfly Algerian airspace to operate flights to other countries. This is due to the decision of the Algerian High Security Council (HSC) to close the air borders with Morocco. From now on, the Moroccan company will have to make long and costly detours through Europe or Africa before reaching Tunisia, Libya, Egypt or even Saudi Arabia (an important market thanks to the Hajj and Umrah) and the Gulf countries.
This closure of the Algerian air borders with Morocco penalizes RAM, which is struggling to recover from the adverse effects of the health crisis. Its competitiveness will be affected compared to the airlines of these countries which will continue to overfly Algerian airspace to reach Morocco.

Algeria broke off diplomatic relations with Morocco on August 24. "The bellicose acts of Morocco towards Algeria require the reconsideration of relations between the two countries and the strengthening of surveillance at the western borders of the country," said a statement from the Algerian Presidency.
