Algeria Accuses Morocco of ’Expansionist Tendencies’ Amid Rising Tensions

Tensions between Morocco and Algeria are far from subsiding. Salah Goudjil, President of the Algerian Senate, said that the actions of the kingdom "are known, and this, from the day after independence, in particular through its expansionist tendencies" and that normalization with Israel is "a scarecrow".
"The actions of the Kingdom are known, and this, from the day after independence, in particular through its expansionist tendencies," said Salah Goudjil in an interview with the newspaper L’Expression on the eve of the commemoration of the events of May 8, 1945. For the President of the Algerian Senate, the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel is an "unnatural alliance" which confirms and gives "a solemn character to a collaboration between the two parties which dates back to dozens of years".
According to him, the two parties have similarities on several points. "Notably the fact that they are occupying countries that are not theirs and deprive their two peoples of enjoying their legitimate rights, disregarding the principles and decisions of international legality," stressed the senior Algerian official.
He argued that "the conflict in the Western Sahara is a decolonization issue". "It is the last colony in Africa and requires finding a solution within the framework of international legality and UN resolutions, especially resolution 15-14 which grants colonized peoples the right to self-determination, which also applies to the Sahrawi people," he explained. He stressed that the prevarications and attempts to evade responsibilities have prevented the realization of a just solution to this conflict which threatens peace and stability in the region, while undermining the credibility of the United Nations.
"We must add that, losing ground on the Western Sahara file marked by the diplomatic setbacks recorded in recent months, in Africa and around the world, Morocco is always falling back on its neighbor Algeria which it accuses of all evils and its alliance with Israel is a scarecrow that it brandishes in the face of the country of one and a half million martyrs. However, Algeria is vigilant in the face of the machinations and designs of these two regimes. History clearly shows us who our friends and who our enemies are," continued Salah Goudjil.
