Al Ahly Star Faces Potential Prison Sentence for Assaulting Moroccan Player

Al Ahly winger Hussein El Shahat risks up to two years in prison for having insulted and assaulted Moroccan international Mohamed Chibi playing for Pyramids FC at the end of the match between the two clubs, which took place on Sunday, July 23 as part of the Egyptian championship.

On Sunday, Mohamed Chibi filed an official complaint with the Egyptian prosecutor’s office, bringing several charges against Hussein El-Shahat, local media report. Under Article 85 of the Physical Education Act, the Al Ahly player faces a prison sentence of up to two years. The Pyramids FC management has called on a team of six lawyers from a reputable law firm to represent the Moroccan international in this case.

On July 23, Hussein El Shahat slapped, insulted and threatened to kill Mohamed Chibi at the end of the match that pitted their clubs (0-3) as part of the Egyptian championship. "I was the victim of insults and offensive remarks towards my mother and father during the Super Cup match in the United Arab Emirates, as well as during today’s match, where I suffered provocations and blows during the two matches," the Moroccan international said. "Before today’s incident and before the slap, there had been threats to break my leg, where I was told: ’If you had started the match, I would have broken your leg.’ This threat jeopardizes my future in Egyptian football. I could have easily reacted the same way, or even more, but the respect for the internal rules of the Pyramids FC club and my superiors at the club pushed me to avoid any reaction at that time," he explained.

Following the incident, the Egyptian Football Federation sanctioned Hussein Al-Shahat: a two-match suspension and a fine of 20,000 Egyptian pounds. Sanctions deemed insufficient.
