African Cup of Nations 2022 at Risk of Cancellation Due to Omicron Surge

The rapid spread of the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, could lead the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to cancel the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) scheduled to start on January 9, 2022.
The African football body could announce the cancellation of the CAN starting in January in the next few hours, reports RMC Sport, adding that several national team coaches have already been informed of this possibility.

Moroccan players playing in the Spanish championship were supposed to leave their clubs next month to join the national team, which club coaches dread. Thus, for example, Sevilla FC should temporarily part with Yassine Bounou, Youssef En Nesyri and Munir El Haddadi, three key pieces in Lopetegui’s system. Even injured, En-Nesyri will not miss the call from Morocco. The cancellation of the CAN, if confirmed, would undoubtedly be good news for Seville.
On the Premier League side, English clubs are also keeping their fingers crossed that the CAN will be canceled, as Moroccan players would have to be quarantined upon their return, further prolonging their absence from the field. In any case, a statement from CAF is eagerly awaited to officially announce the cancellation or not of the Africa Cup of Nations, the most important football competition for African teams.
