Affaire Imane à Taza: 15 years in prison for the ex-husband who had disfigured his wife

The Taza Court of Appeal sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for the savage assault on his ex-wife, Imane. This verdict closes a case that has shaken Morocco and reignited the debate on violence against women.

The criminal court found the defendant guilty of rape, kidnapping, and serious assault with a weapon. In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the convicted man to bear all court costs. Although the victim had withdrawn her civil party constitution, the severity of the sentence reflects the gravity of the acts attributed to this individual with a criminal record.

The attack, which occurred on September 23, 2025 in broad daylight, had shocked by its brutality. The assailant had inflicted deep lacerations to the victim’s face, requiring more than 130 stitches. The rapid spread of images of the attack on social networks had transformed this personal drama into a national controversy, raising public awareness about the safety of women.

"I am satisfied with the decision and my mental health has started to improve," Imane said after the verdict.

The victim is currently undergoing reconstructive treatment in a plastic surgery clinic in Rabat. This care is provided by the National Union of Moroccan Women, on the instructions of Princess Lalla Meryem. This specialized protocol also includes psychological and social support through the "Kolonamaak" platform to accompany her towards complete economic and social reintegration.
