Moroccan Princess Leads Crusade Against Domestic Violence Epidemic

The National Union of Moroccan Women, chaired by Princess Lalla Meryem, has decided to take charge of Imane, a 25-year-old woman who was the victim of a violent assault by her ex-husband in the city of Taza.
In a statement, the Union indicated that the victim is undergoing specialized progressive treatment in one of the plastic surgery clinics in Rabat, in order to repair the deep damage caused by the assault on her face. Imane will also receive social and psychological support from the team of social workers on the "Koulouna Maak" (We are all with you) platform of the Union. As part of this support, the young woman will also receive assistance from the Union for her empowerment and social and economic integration.
The case of Imane reveals the alarming extent of the phenomenon of physical and psychological attacks against women, including "Tcharmil" or knife attacks to mutilate women. Imane, the mother of a four-and-a-half-year-old child, told the Al3omk newspaper the details of the savage assault she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband. She says she was first assaulted by the man a few years ago and had filed a complaint. The violent husband had been arrested, but out of love for her son, Imane had eventually withdrawn her complaint and officially married him.
But that changed nothing. The man continued to be violent, constantly threatening the young woman’s life. On the night of the incident, he broke into her home, took her phone and forced her to accompany him with her son to an abandoned house where he beat her. Imane adds that she managed to escape the next morning and go to her mother’s home. She then filed a complaint with the King’s Prosecutor, accompanied by a medical certificate attesting to 19 days of incapacity. Having learned that the young woman had filed a complaint against him, the ex-husband contacted her to ask her to withdraw the complaint.
The young woman was later assaulted in the street by the ex-husband, who chased her to the police station where she was advised to file a new complaint. On her way home, she encountered the man again, who threatened her with a knife. He then proceeded to lacerate her face, even trying to tear out one of her eyes. Seriously injured, Imane was taken to the hospital where she underwent surgery. Today, she says she is suffering from a severe psychological crisis: her child is afraid of her, she refuses to look in the mirror and she is thinking of suicide.
