AfDB Grants Morocco €34.2 Million for Rabat-Salé Airport Expansion Amid Rising Costs

The African Development Bank (AfDB) will grant an additional loan of 34.20 million euros to Morocco, for the project to extend and modernize the Rabat-Salé airport, whose initial financing was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This new financing was requested by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, in order to complete all the construction sites and ensure the proper execution of the project, says a statement from ONDA, which specifies that the total cost of the project has been revised upwards to 176 million euros, compared to an initial estimate of 171 million.
This extension project is part of the development of the transport sector, in particular the continued upgrading and modernization of infrastructure and services in order to increase the logistical competitiveness of the Moroccan economy.
It is specifically aimed at contributing to strengthening the capacity of Rabat Salé airport, to meet passenger and freight traffic needs by 2035, as well as contributing to the tourism and economic development of the country and the region, it is pointed out.
In total, the AfDB’s contribution to the financing of the project amounts to 109.20 million euros, or 62.05% of the total cost of the project. It should be recalled that the AfDB had already granted a loan of 75 million euros in 2018 for the extension and modernization of Rabat-Salé international airport.
