Abandoned Cricket Stadium in Tangier: Morocco’s Forgotten Sports Legacy

At a time when sports initiatives are multiplying in Morocco, and in Tangier in particular, the national cricket stadium of the city, built in 2002 by the Emirati millionaire, Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, with the aim of promoting cricket in the Arab world, has fallen into disrepair.
The national cricket stadium in Tangier has sadly aged badly, due to lack of maintenance. Its ticket office has been transformed into a feeding place for sheep. One can observe an excavator stuck in the mud in the outer field. Since 2013, no cricket match has been played in the stadium, observes Achkayn.
Yet the national cricket stadium in Tangier is a sports infrastructure that had hosted major competitions. It is the only one that has been used for senior cricket in Morocco. The stadium hosted its first international tournament from August 12 to 21, 2002, in which the teams of Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka, among others, participated. In 2024, Morocco faced the Marylebone cricket club. Today, the stadium has been abandoned to the great dismay of cricket lovers.
