Zaragoza Court Acquits Couple in Moroccan Woman’s Sexual Assault Case

The court of Zaragoza acquitted, for lack of convincing evidence, Mohamed A. and his partner, Elena Loredana N., accused of having sexually assaulted an irregular Moroccan woman. The prosecution had requested 21 years in prison against the couple.
The court ruled that there is not enough evidence to convict the Moroccan and his partner, accused by the victim, a young woman of Moroccan origin, of sexual assault. The victim’s testimony during the trial did not convince the judge, who pronounced the acquittal of the two accused, reports Heraldo.
The plaintiff arrived in Zaragoza in 2018 from Germany where she had studied computer science and worked for several years. She met the accused couple who allegedly offered to help her renew her expired residence permit. "I met Mohamed and he told me he knew people who could help me get the papers, but the first thing he did was deflower me," the young woman said.
The victim waited a while before filing a complaint against the couple at the police station, which led the defense lawyer to ask her why she had not reacted immediately or asked the neighbors for help. "They never left me alone, and I didn’t speak Spanish. In addition, they always threatened to call a police friend." And to add: "Yes, I had a phone, but what was I going to do? Call my family to tell them I was having sex with a man who was not my husband? [...] It would be a shame for them."
The judges expressed doubts about the young woman’s testimony, after several witnesses affirmed that they had not noticed anything strange in the relationship between the Moroccan, the main accused, and the plaintiff. As proof, they showed several photos of the plaintiff during outings made in a group with the Moroccan.
