12-Year-Old Boy Critically Injured by Electric Shock at Spanish Festival

Mohamed, a 12-year-old boy of Moroccan origin, was electrocuted on Monday during the festivities of Saint-John in El Albujón (Cartagena). He was admitted to intensive care in a hospital in Murcia.

The minor received an electric shock. He was found unconscious on the ground by a man who was running a small fast food booth. "The man started shouting when he saw the child: he pulled out his tongue and took care to turn him on his side. The boy was lucky, because two nurses who were not on duty were by his side until the ambulance arrived," says a spokesman for the El Albujón (Cartagena) neighborhood council to El Español.

Mohamed, nicknamed "Mbappé" by his school friends, was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Virgen de La Arrixaca hospital in Murcia. "It seems he has burns on his arm and they had to intubate him, but he’s doing better," assures the neighborhood council spokesman. The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident. "The most plausible hypothesis is that the child touched the booth at the same time as the streetlight just behind it that was establishing a connection and received an electric shock," explains the spokesman.

After a thorough check of the electrical installations of all the stands that were at the fair, the engineers and technicians of the Cartagena town hall "did not detect any anomaly". Activities at the exhibition park were suspended on Tuesday and will resume this Wednesday. Mohamed, for his part, is still in intensive care in the pediatric department of the hospital. The Judicial Police continues its investigation.
