WTCR Cancels 2020 Marrakech Grand Prix as Moroccan Star Bennani Exits Championship
Monday 10 February 2020, by
The Marrakech Grand Prix of the WTCR (World Touring Car Cup) world championship has been cancelled this year due to the absence of Moroccan driver Mehdi Bennani in the championship.
According to the International Automobile Federation, the Marrakech Grand Prix is not on the 2020 WTCR (World Touring Car Cup) world championship calendar. On its website, the Federation stated that the ochre city has been a unique venue for the season opener, due to the beauty of the country, the festive atmosphere and the warm hospitality.
According to the same source, this end of collaboration is due to the absence of Moroccan driver Mehdi Bennani from the starting grid. For François Ribeiro, head of Eurosport Events, WTCR promoter, organizing the event without the participation and support of Mehdi Bennani, Morocco’s best driver, unfortunately out of the WTCR race, means that it is simply no longer possible to offer a race weekend, at the legendary level and quality, in Marrakech.
Moreover, the head of Eurosport Events wants to remain close to Morocco for future collaboration. He believes that the Kingdom has become a major player in the automotive industry since their first race in 2009, as well as a solid automotive production center for Africa.
"I have no doubt that our paths will cross again. We want to express our immense gratitude to the organizers of the Marrakech Grand Prix for all their efforts, dedication and support since the first visit of the WTCC," added François Ribeiro.
