World Cup Qualifier Postponed: Morocco-Guinea Match Delayed Amid Political Unrest

The political instability in Guinea has led to the postponement of Morocco’s match counting for the 2nd round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, which was to be held on Monday at the Lansana Conté stadium in Conakry. This is what the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided on Sunday.

In a statement, CAF announced that the match between Morocco and Guinea, initially scheduled for Monday, September 6 in Conakry, has been postponed.

"The current political and security situation in Guinea is very volatile and is being closely monitored by FIFA and CAF. In order to ensure the safety and security of the players and to protect all match officials for the match between Guinea and Morocco, scheduled for Monday, September 6 in Conakry, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone this match. Information regarding the rescheduling will be communicated later," it reads.

The members of the Moroccan delegation, blocked in their residence, are doing well, says a source within the FRMF. For his part, the coach of the Atlas Lions hopes to be able to return to Morocco with his players as soon as possible.

"We really don’t know what’s going on outside the hotel. It’s been shooting since 10 o’clock this morning. The presidential palace is not very far from us, in my opinion there is not much in the street. I saw soldiers running across the street. We don’t know. The players are not reassured, the concern is present, that’s for sure. For me it’s less problematic, I’m used to it. But this situation is weird. The Moroccan authorities, including His Majesty, are very committed to helping us," adds Vahid Halilhodzic.
