Woman Jailed for Spreading COVID-19 Misinformation in Morocco

A woman in her fifties was sentenced to one month in prison for disseminating a video in which she denied the existence of Covid-19. This was the decision of the court of first instance in Safi on Monday, July 27.
In addition to disseminating false information about the coronavirus, this woman hurled insults at the health authorities. According to her, Safi has not recorded any cases of Covid-19 contamination. The police conducted an investigation after the video was posted on social media. The accused was identified, located and then arrested.
After her arrest, the defendant was placed in pre-trial detention, reports Al Massae. The charges against her were of several kinds: incitement to disobey orders and decisions from public authorities, insulting a public official and death threats. But the judges reduced these charges, considering that she had not measured the seriousness of her remarks, the same source specifies.
The court of first instance of Safi ultimately sentenced the defendant to one month in prison.
