EU Welcomes Spain’s Shift on Western Sahara, Backs UN-Led Resolution

The European Union has reacted to Spain’s new position on the Sahara issue. Madrid "considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the most serious, realistic and credible basis for resolving the dispute".
When asked about Spain’s change of position on the Sahara, Nabila Massrali, spokeswoman for EU Foreign Affairs, assured that "the European Union welcomes the positive evolution of bilateral relations between its Member States and Morocco, which can only be beneficial for the implementation of the Euro-Moroccan partnership as a whole". She also reiterated the support of the EU executive for "the efforts of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to reach a just, realistic, pragmatic, sustainable and mutually acceptable political solution".
She also recalled the joint declaration of June 27, 2019 following the 14th Association Council meeting between Rabat and the Twenty-Seven, which "uses the same terms on the future of the Sahara". The EU welcomes "the credible efforts made by Morocco" and "encourages all parties to pursue this commitment in a spirit of realism and compromise," added the spokeswoman.
