Wave of Mysterious Suicides Shocks Moroccan Cities, Death Toll Rises to 6

Two cases of suicide were recorded on Sunday in the city of Settat, bringing the number of people who have taken their own lives in this city and in the neighboring city of Berrechid to 6, under mysterious circumstances.

These tragedies, which occurred under undetermined circumstances, have plunged several families into mourning. The first revealed case is a woman in her thirties, G.B., a mother of children, who lived in the Maymouna neighborhood of Settat. According to Hespress, the young mother had ingested a toxic substance to end her life. Transferred in critical condition to the emergency room, she died in the intensive care unit.

Like the first case, a man in his forties also took a toxic substance and ingested acid in the vicinity of Sidi Hajjaj, near Settat. He committed suicide after being suspected of the murder of his wife in the city of Kenitra, for unknown reasons. Another man in his forties, suffering from psychological problems, committed suicide by throwing himself into a well in the Ouled Farès region, near Ben Ahmed.

Well before these cases, three other people had taken their own lives on Friday in Berrechid and Settat, under circumstances that were the subject of investigations conducted by the Royal Gendarmerie, under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office near the Settat Court of Appeal.

The first, "A. H", a sexagenarian from the vicinity of Dar Chafi’i, in the Al-Burouj circle, drank a toxic substance before passing away at the Hassan II Hospital in Settat. The second, "M. A", born in 1971 in the vicinity of El Gara, hanged himself. His body was examined by the Royal Gendarmerie and a representative of the local authority. As for the third victim, a 32-year-old man suffering from mental illness, he was found lifeless, with a rope around his neck, in the suburbs of Berrechid.

On the instructions of the competent Public Prosecutor’s Office, the six bodies were transferred to the morgue, pending an autopsy to determine the true causes of death.
