Vox Proposes Military Training Center in Melilla to Counter Moroccan Claims

Vox proposes to strengthen the military presence in Melilla by creating a training center for new recruits, in order to deter Morocco, which continues to express claims on Ceuta and Melilla.
This training center will be located on the facilities of the disused barracks in the autonomous city, which will need some renovations to accommodate the troops. The proposal under study could be adopted if the far-right formation scores well in the May 28 municipal elections, reports Ok Diario.
There is currently only a military camp in Cáceres, where newly recruited soldiers spend three months learning to handle weapons and carry out marches and major military maneuvers. About 2,000 new soldiers are trained each year in this camp, according to estimates.
The establishment of a military camp in Melilla could have implications in terms of foreign policy, as Morocco continues to claim this territory, as well as Ceuta and other Spanish islands and rocks. Last March, the President of the Moroccan Senate again recalled that Morocco will eventually recover the two occupied presidios.
Furthermore, according to "The establishment of the center would boost Melilla’s economy, multiply visits on the occasion of the Oath of Allegiance, and also contribute to the enhancement of the city in the rest of Spain," explains José Miguel Tasende, the president of Vox Melilla.
