Viral Videos Spur Rapid Police Response to Rising Crime in Morocco

Theft, assaults against people and public property with bladed weapons, and other forms of crime have become commonplace in several Moroccan cities. Thanks to the dissemination of numerous videos on social networks, law enforcement has managed to arrest suspects very quickly.

The resurgence of these criminal behaviors in the streets requires strengthening security interventions to limit the presence of people who sow disorder in neighborhoods, an active activist in the city of Casablanca told Hespress. According to him, this phenomenon, now widespread and documented by videos shared on social networks, requires intensifying patrols by law enforcement services, especially in the affected neighborhoods. He is convinced that enhancing surveillance cameras under security services in the streets of various cities will allow for quick localization of suspects.

"What we see in terms of violence, ’tcharmil’, threats, attempted assaults, and attacks against law enforcement is regrettable and heartbreaking," a security expert lamented in a statement to the same media. He attributed this situation to a misunderstanding of internationally recognized human rights, asserting that those who benefit the most are the perpetrators of these assaults, not other parties. "The conditions in Moroccan penitentiary establishments, where human rights are respected towards inmates, push some of them to repeat such acts, instead of being re-educated and encouraged to integrate positively into society and avoid theft and various forms of crime," he explained.

The expert also holds the political actor responsible for this situation. He emphasized that it also contributes to this situation by favoring the adoption of alternative sentences instead of toughening the application of criminal law against those who break the law. According to him, it is necessary to mobilize actors in the fields of culture, education, and media to disseminate programs instilling authentic Moroccan values in youth, far from the imported culture that encourages violence and dependency.
