Used Car Prices Surge in Morocco as New Vehicle Shortages Persist

The lack of new car inventory is pushing many Moroccans to acquire used cars. As a result, their prices are skyrocketing.

New car sales are collapsing due to lack of available vehicles. Buying a new car in Morocco now takes time. The buyer has to wait an average of 6 months between ordering and delivery. They also have to face soaring prices: the price can reach 100,000 DH per unit. According to statistics from the Association of New Car Importers, the market is down 10%, or about 83,831 cars sold in the first six months of 2022, reports L’Économiste.

The situation is benefiting used car sellers: 10 used cars are sold for every new one, compared to 3 to 1 normally. But this rush of Moroccans to the used market has de facto led to a rise in vehicle prices, which is between 15% and 20% depending on the models and according to the law of supply and demand. According to an operator’s explanations, the average price increase is in the range of 20,000 to 30,000 DH. Buyers are choosing major brands like BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Range Rover.
