US Army Long-Range Strike Weapon Test Morocco 2026

Tan-Tan served as a testing ground for a new strike capability of the US Army. As part of the African Lion 2026 exercise, the US Army deployed five long-range precision munitions LRPM, for Long Range Precision Munition.

According to the US Army, two LRPMs were fired simultaneously on May 2, then three more on May 4. These tests were conducted by a US operational unit and demonstrated the control of multiple munitions in flight by a single operator.

The objective was also to validate the capability of these munitions to execute their mission with broad autonomy. After the exercise, the military official cited by the US Army praised a "precise and reliable" performance, with a configuration deemed simple for the operator.

A coordinated strike at over 290 kilometers

The LRPM is a tube-launched, semi-autonomous munition that can be fired from the ground or from the air. Its range exceeds 290 kilometers. It is designed to strike targets in depth, with the possibility of coordinating multiple simultaneous attacks against one or multiple targets.

The system relies notably on the Altius 700 aerial vector and on a payload developed by the research and development structures of the US Army. It can be used alone or networked with other munitions, in a so-called "wolfpack" logic, where multiple systems cooperate to penetrate a complex enemy zone.

At Tan-Tan, the US Army claims to have tested a group composed solely of LRPMs, in a concept called "hunter-killer". The program is now presented as ahead of schedule, with deployment beginning planned by the end of 2027.

This test above all confirms the role of African Lion as a framework for testing American capabilities in North Africa. This is not a Moroccan purchase nor an employment by the Royal Armed Forces, but an American test conducted on Moroccan soil.
