Morocco Eyes Cutting-Edge US Spy Planes, Reshaping Global Intelligence Landscape

Several countries, including Morocco, wish to acquire the US Army’s HADES (High-Altitude Extended-Range Detection and Surveillance) program, a new generation of electronic surveillance aircraft.

According to Aviation Week, Morocco and other countries want to acquire this American technology through foreign military sales (FMS) procedures. Morocco would have expressed "a strong desire to eventually integrate capabilities similar to those of HADES into its national air intelligence system," the specialized magazine reports. According to industry analysts, this technology could become, in the medium term, "one of the pillars of Western airborne intelligence, at the intersection of satellite capabilities and tactical theater missions."

For the past five years, the US Army has been developing this high-altitude intelligence system using a "singular and pragmatic" method, the publication notes, specifying that the Pentagon has decided to "fly aircraft owned by subcontractors on actual missions in order to identify operational requirements." With this approach, the US Army has been able to "collect concrete data in complex environments, even before the first prototypes are put into service," it is pointed out.

Installed on long-range business aircraft, these new-generation intelligence platforms can perform both electronic eavesdropping, optical surveillance, and long-range radar interception missions. The first HADES units "will soon be conducting real ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) flights to refine procedures and validate the system’s performance," the publication announces.

In this context, these aircraft will be combined with the IVEWS (Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite) electronic warfare system. A system that, according to the program’s engineers, forms "a modular architecture capable of detecting, jamming, and countering emerging electromagnetic threats."
