UN Urges Commitment to Political Process in Western Sahara Conflict

In reaction to Spain’s change of position on the Sahara, the UN spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, called on the parties to the conflict (Morocco and the Polisario) and the interested parties (Algeria, Spain, China...) to support the efforts of the special envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, "to relaunch the political process" to resolve the conflict.
Stéphane Dujarric stressed "the importance of maintaining the full commitment (of the parties) to the political process facilitated by the UN, in accordance with resolution 2602 (2021)", adopted last October by the Security Council, which calls for "a realistic, viable, lasting, acceptable solution for the parties" and "provides for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people within the framework of arrangements in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter."

In a letter addressed to King Mohammed VI, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, recognized that the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco is the "most serious, realistic and credible" solution to the conflict. After this change of position on Friday, the Moroccan ambassador to Madrid, Karima Benyaich, returned to her post on Sunday, after more than 10 months of absence. At the same time, the Algerian government, condemning this decision by Spain, recalled its ambassador to Madrid, Saïd Moussi, on Saturday.
During a meeting held on Sunday in Tunxi with his Algerian counterpart, Ramtane Lamamra, the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, reiterated his country’s support for "efforts for a just and lasting solution based on international law and UN resolutions." China and Algeria "have a historical relationship and support peace and justice," the Chinese ministry said in a statement.
