The United States welcomes a "historic" vote at the UN and calls on Algeria to negotiate

The American reaction came just after the adoption of a new resolution that establishes the Moroccan autonomy plan as the main basis for a solution. US Ambassador Michael Waltz described this vote as "historic", seeing it as a "unique opportunity" for a peace that has "been too long delayed".

Mr. Waltz, acting as the spokesperson on the issue, reaffirmed Washington’s support for the Personal Envoy Staffan de Mistura and the role of MINURSO, whose mandate has been extended until October 2026. He also underscored President Trump’s commitment to reaching a final settlement.

The Moroccan autonomy plan as the "only basis" for negotiation

The central point of the American statement was the direct call to the parties, particularly Algeria. Michael Waltz insisted that they seize the opportunity "in the coming weeks" to return to the negotiating table.

He specified the framework for these discussions, calling for "serious discussions using Morocco’s credible and realistic autonomy project. This is the only basis for a just and lasting solution to this dispute," stating that the United States "believes that peace is possible in the region this year" and that they will spare "no effort to facilitate progress".
