Moroccan Ambassador Omar Hilale Calls on Algerians
The Moroccan Ambassador to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, has described the recent Security Council resolution on the Sahara as a "decisive turning point" and a "historic change". He emphasized that this decision paved the way for a new era for the region, calling on Algeria to seize this opportunity for reconciliation in 2026.
In an interview with the American channel Newsmax TV, Omar Hilale recalled the historical link between his country and the United States. He noted that Morocco, the first nation to recognize American independence, now sees Washington supporting its sovereignty over the Sahara. "We hope that in 2026, Algeria will finally turn the page and recognize this reality as well," he said.
For the ambassador, the proclamation of October 31 as "Moroccan Unity Day" by King Mohammed VI is the "culmination of fifty years of diplomatic efforts". He reported that this decision had been met with spontaneous celebrations in the streets of Laâyoune, Dakhla and Smara.
The central role of Donald Trump and the call to Algeria
Omar Hilale particularly emphasized the role played by US President Donald Trump. According to him, the American recognition of 2020 has "broken the comfortable neutrality of the Security Council" and has "imposed a vision". The diplomat welcomed his involvement in the attempt at regional reconciliation and publicly invited Donald Trump to visit the Moroccan Sahara in 2026.
The Moroccan representative reaffirmed that the autonomy plan is now the only serious option, already supported by France, the United Kingdom and Germany. He invited the still hesitant countries to "come and see for yourselves" the development of infrastructure and the stability of the southern provinces.
The ambassador’s most direct message, however, was addressed to Algeria, designated as the main obstacle to the integration of the Maghreb. "We have done our part. History proves us right. It is time to rebuild," concluded Omar Hilale.
