UNESCO Recognizes Moroccan Equestrian Art ’Tbourida’ as Intangible Cultural Heritage

An ancient warrior tradition dating back to the 13th century, the Moroccan equestrian art of the "tbourida" has been integrated into the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.
Very popular in the countryside, this spectacular cavalry charge is associated with both national and regional festivities. Every year, the El-Jadida Horse Show offers thousands of enthusiastic spectators grandiose shows.
Thus, after examining the application file submitted in 2019, the UNESCO Evaluation Committee decided to inscribe this equestrian art on the list of intangible cultural heritage.
For the institution, "the tbourida is a traditional discipline that is passed down from generation to generation" and which "contains essential elements of the cultural identity and collective memory of Morocco, its regions and its communities."
The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List now includes nearly 500 inscriptions.
