UNESCO's Mediterranean Diet Heritage: Chefchaouen Celebrates 10-Year Milestone

It has been ten years since the Mediterranean diet was declared an intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO. The province of Chefchaouen is actively preparing this event, which will be celebrated on November 16 and 17.

Most of the work for this celebration will be held remotely and will highlight the role played by Chefchaouen, along with the three cities of Soria in Spain, Cilento in Italy and Koroni in Greece, in helping it to obtain this distinction. "In 2010, Chefchaouen was recognized, along with the other three cities, as an emblematic community of the Mediterranean Diet. Since 2013, other territories in the Mediterranean basin, namely Tavira in Portugal, Agros in Cyprus, and the islands of Brac and Hvar in Croatia, have joined us by obtaining this prestigious distinction," says the president of the Chefchaouen municipal council, Mohamed Sefiani.

This distinction has allowed Chefchaouen to become aware of the richness of its intangible heritage, namely "the typical way of life of the city and all the knowledge, customs and traditions that have endured in the local culture for centuries." Mohamed Sefiani recalled that the municipality approved in 2013 the Mediterranean Diet Action Plan in Chefchaouen, which "is divided into four main areas of work: the preservation and enhancement of local heritage, the strengthening of the capacities of local actors, awareness-raising and communication, as well as governance," reports aujourdhui.ma.

This 10th anniversary will be marked by the programming of a series of scientific and cultural activities in which experts, academics and mayors from the "Mediterranean region" as well as workshops and photo and painting contests related to the main objective of this event will participate, the same source specifies.
