Uncle Sentenced for Assaulting Nephew’s Killer in Fleury-Mérogis Prison

Karim, the uncle of little Younès, was sentenced to four months in prison for having inflicted blows on Williams, his former brother-in-law, found guilty of the death of his nephew, during a walk in wing D1 of the Fleury-Mérogis (Essonne) remand center. This is the verdict handed down by the Evry-Courcouronnes criminal court on Thursday, January 21.
On July 10, 2020, the Evry Assize Court had sentenced Williams to 20 years in prison for "habitual violence against a minor under 15 years of age resulting in death without intent to cause it". This conviction followed the death of Younès, 2 years old, son of his former partner. Karim, the boy’s uncle, was in prison before the birth and death of his nephew, and the conviction of his former brother-in-law. The latter wanted to "know what happened to his nephew".
The two inmates cross paths in prison during a walk. The fight is inevitable. Williams hits the temple with a white sock loaded with glass, reports Le Parisien. A crowd of about thirty inmates forms. According to the testimony of a guard, one of them holds Williams by the arms while Karim rains down punches and knees on him. Meanwhile, the others shouted: "Kill him! Kill him!" This assault earned Williams 12 days of temporary work interruption.
In the witness box last Thursday, the aggressor tried to justify his act. "I just wanted to settle accounts over the death of my nephew," Karim explains. "I wanted a right of reply, the why and how. My nephew, I never knew him. The truth about his death, I only know it thanks to articles. So when he told me he had done nothing, I saw red." The inmate claims to have told the prison administration not to transfer Karim to wing D1, to avoid him and his former brother-in-law crossing paths. "I reported that he should not be put near me," he assures. "We were told that I wouldn’t run into him because we wouldn’t be on the same floor." "There were dysfunctions in the prison administration," his lawyer believes.
The verdict is handed down: Karim was sentenced to four months in prison. He is also required to pay 1,200 euros to his victim as compensation for moral damage for "violence in a group". On February 14, 2019, he had already been convicted for similar acts.
