French Court Sentences Man to Prison for Domestic Violence Against Moroccan Wife

The Quimper Judicial Court sentenced the husband of a Moroccan living in France to six months in prison with probation for habitual domestic violence committed against his wife.

The husband, a 38-year-old man of Turkish origin living in Concarneau, and the Moroccan woman had married in Morocco in 2016. The following year, his partner had joined him in France to pursue her studies. This is when the domestic violence began.

The victim confides that her husband insulted her, hit her and made her "a prisoner, a slave". She claims to have suffered the same violence when she was pregnant. Exasperated, she filed a complaint against him and decided to separate from him in December 2019.

The defendant had been tried on October 22 for habitual violence. Prosecutor Fatou Mano had requested six months in prison with a two-year probationary suspension, an obligation to receive treatment, to attend a workshop on preventing sexist violence and a ban on contact. Sophie Gessat, the lawyer for the civil party, had requested 15,000 euros in damages.

On Thursday, the Quimper Criminal Court handed down its verdict: the defendant was sentenced to six months suspended, reports Le Télégramme. Parental authority was also withdrawn from him. He must pay 1,500 euros in damages to his victim for her moral prejudice.
