1,200 trucks a day with Tanger Med: Algeciras prepares for 800,000 trailers a year

More than 1,200 trucks travel between Tanger Med and Algeciras every day. Faced with growing trade with Morocco, the Spanish port is preparing to handle 800,000 trailers a year before 2030.

Tanger Med accounts for around 93% of the truck traffic using the routes between Algeciras and Morocco and Ceuta. The Moroccan port has thus established itself as the main crossing point for goods between the two shores of the Strait.

In 2025, Algeciras handled 527,086 trailers, nearly half a million of them on the corridor with Tanger Med. Its port authority wants to increase this traffic to 800,000 units annually before 2030, reports Europa Sur.

That would represent an increase of more than 50%. The growth is already visible: between January and July 2026, the Strait routes carried 329,132 trucks in ro-ro traffic, 1% more than during the same period in 2025.

Tanger Med becomes essential to industrial supply chains

Every day, more than 1,200 heavy goods vehicles transport agricultural products, clothing, electronic equipment and automotive components between Tanger Med and Algeciras. These goods supply production chains spread across Morocco, Spain and the rest of Europe.

The Renault plant in Melloussa illustrates this integration. The site produces around 1,700 vehicles a day, and a significant share of its components passes through Algeciras. Cars and parts manufactured in Morocco then use the same corridor to reach the European market.

The expected growth is forcing the Spanish port to increase its reception capacity, streamline customs and health controls, and further digitize its procedures. Algeciras has also just unlocked 20 million euros to strengthen one of its main quays, an operation this time intended for large container ships.

Passenger traffic is evolving differently. Between January and July, 1,355,895 passengers used the Algeciras–Tanger Med route, a decline of 2.6%. The Tarifa–Tanger Ville route, by contrast, increased by 8% for passengers and 18% for vehicles.

These fluctuations have not affected the dynamics of freight traffic. Even during the interruption of passenger routes between the two countries, commercial traffic with Tanger Med continued to operate. With the goal of 800,000 trailers a year, the Moroccan port confirms its central role in the supply chains linking Morocco to Europe.
