Troyes: A Franco-Moroccan candidate lynched on the web for having represented Morocco at the Olympics

The announcement of the candidacy of Sarah Fraincart, endorsed by La France Insoumise for the municipal elections in Troyes, immediately provoked a wave of hatred on social networks.

At 26 years old, this former Olympic athlete is the target of insults related to her dual French-Moroccan nationality and her past as a competitor under the Moroccan flag. Sarah Fraincart firmly denounced the violence of these attacks while affirming her pride in her identity and her history, assuring that she would not give up in the face of this hostility, according to Le Parisien.

The candidate’s detractors mainly point to her participation in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where she competed in rowing for Morocco. Sarah Fraincart justifies this choice by a unique career opportunity and a partnership with the French federation, stressing that she thus marked the history of Moroccan sport by becoming the first rower from the country to participate in the Olympics.

Within her political movement, deputies such as Bastien Lachaud and Danièle Obono have expressed their full support, recalling that a dual national citizen can perfectly represent French voters. In France, the law also allows dual nationals to stand in all electoral contests without any restriction.

Already a candidate in the 2022 legislative elections, where she had obtained nearly 17% of the vote, Sarah Fraincart now intends to tackle the record of François Baroin at the head of the city. Her campaign is primarily focused on the working-class neighborhoods of Troyes, where she denounces a municipal policy that neglects the most precarious areas in favor of the city center.
