Travel to Morocco: New Warning from the United States

The US Department of State published a new version of its advisory on Morocco on September 4. The Kingdom remains classified at level 2 on a four-level scale, corresponding to the recommendation to “exercise increased caution.”

Washington is therefore not calling on its nationals to cancel their trip. The US administration also specifies that the alert level has not been changed and that only the summary of the advisory has been updated.

The US authorities nevertheless refer to a risk “of terrorist violence, including attacks and other activities” in Morocco. They report no specific threat or particular event behind this update.

Hotels, restaurants and transportation among possible targets

In its detailed recommendations, the Department of State lists large gatherings, popular hotels, clubs and restaurants, places of worship, schools, parks, shopping centers, markets and public transportation among the potential targets.

It believes that terrorist groups continue to plan possible attacks in the region, including in Morocco. Individual actions, which are difficult to detect and may occur without warning, are also mentioned.

The document nevertheless emphasizes that Morocco has “strong security services.” It recalls that Moroccan authorities regularly arrest people suspected of links to terrorist groups and likely to target Moroccan or foreign interests. Washington had recently highlighted the effectiveness of its security cooperation with Morocco.

American travelers are encouraged to remain attentive to their surroundings, particularly in tourist areas, and to avoid camping in isolated locations. They are also advised to enroll in the STEP consular alert program.

The previous advisory, published on April 21, 2025, had already classified Morocco at level 2, with terrorism as a risk factor. The September 4 update therefore does not constitute an increase in the alert level.
