The United States considers Morocco as safe as France

On the eve of the spring holidays, American diplomacy has carried out a comprehensive reassessment of risks abroad. In this new mapping, Morocco confirms its status at level 2. This category encourages American citizens to "exercise increased caution" during their travels. The country is thus positioned exactly on the same footing as major tourist nations such as the United Kingdom or Germany, far from the very low-risk destinations (level 1) such as Switzerland or Portugal where only normal precautions are required.

This classification does not indicate any immediate or severe threat. According to the tourism experts mentioned by diplomacy, it mainly highlights the possibility of acts of terrorism and the need for increased vigilance in heavily frequented areas. This ranking acts as a simple reminder to encourage travelers to remain attentive to their environment and to follow local guidelines. The U.S. authorities also encourage their citizens to register with the STEP program to receive real-time alerts and facilitate assistance in case of emergency.

These new recommendations mainly reflect a rise in global geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East. The recent U.S. military strikes against Iranian targets have prompted Washington to downgrade the assessment of several neighboring countries. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman are thus moving to level 3, where it is firmly advised to "reconsider" one’s trip. Iran, on the other hand, remains at level 4, the maximum risk calling for "no travel", due to conflicts, terrorist threats and arbitrary detentions.

To justify this overall caution, the State Department has also issued a global alert, warning that groups affiliated with Tehran could target places popular with Western tourists. The rest of the world is not spared by these security adjustments: while Mexico generally displays a level 2 similar to that of Morocco, the explosion of cartel-related violence has forced Washington to move some of its regions, such as Sinaloa, to the maximum alert status.
