Travel Agency Owner Arrested for Alleged Umrah Scam During Ramadan

The owner of a travel agency was taken into custody on Tuesday, March 28 by the prosecutor of the king near the court of first instance of Tétouan. According to the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, the accused would be involved in a case of fraud against clients who wanted to perform the Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan.

Clients had initially been informed that their trip to Mecca was scheduled for Tuesday, March 21. However, when the date arrived, the agency announced the postponement of the flight, promising its clients to take the first available plane to Saudi Arabia. The agency’s managers then multiplied the evasive justifications to make their clients wait, arousing the suspicions of the latter.

Faced with the lack of official explanation from the agency, the clients organized a protest demonstration in front of the agency’s headquarters, after the director stopped answering their calls. The local authorities and the police services began to investigate the case, before the victims decided to resort to justice.

The clients denounced a scam, claiming to have paid more than 30,000 dirhams to perform the Umrah rites during the month of Ramadan. Following the multiple postponements, the clients realized that they had been victims of a scam and that they would not be able to perform the Umrah through this agency.
