Transparency Report Reveals Stagnant Anti-Corruption Efforts in Morocco’s Defense Sector

According to the transparency barometer in the defense sector, the budget allocated to defense represents $3.69 billion, or 3.1% of GDP, and its army has a workforce of 246,000 military personnel.

The same report, moreover, reveals significant gaps in the points awarded to Morocco, according to the agencies in charge of the evaluation. It shows that in practice, the country has not changed in 8 years.

The study also notes that these figures have made it possible to uncover the risks that could have an impact on corruption in the defense sector, through 20 questions on political risks, 11 questions on financial risks, 17 questions on risks and management related to officials, 6 questions on procedural risks, 19 questions on the arms market.

Regarding the corruption perception index, the study conducted in Morocco by 7 surveys in 2019, concluded that the country is in an "uncomfortable position". Morocco ranks 80th in this Transparency study in 2019, compared to 73rd in 2018, we learn.
