Morocco Slips in Global Corruption Rankings, Transparency International Reports

Morocco has not made any significant progress in the fight against corruption. With a score of 40/100, it even loses one point compared to last year, ranking 86th out of 180 countries ranked, compared to 80th position a year earlier. This is the finding of the new Corruption Perceptions Index 2020 (CPI 2020) of Transparency International.
The corruption perception index for the year 2020 based on 13 surveys and assessments conducted by experts in 180 countries, including Morocco, indicates that the kingdom is in a state of chronic corruption, with an average of less than 40 points. In 9 years, the kingdom has made no tangible progress in this regard, dropping one point and six places compared to 2019.
This Transparency International report is not at all in line with the optimism of the Head of Government, Saâdeddine El Othmani, who had declared last week in the House of Advisors, during the monthly session of questions addressed to him on public policies, that "the anti-corruption strategy is bearing fruit." And the senior official reassured that his government will not let up in this fight, calling "to fight this scourge within the framework of a unified vision in which everyone must be involved."
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, perceived as "highly corrupt," has seen "little progress," the Index also notes, indicating that the countries in the region have an average of 39/100. The United Arab Emirates and Qatar are the best performing countries in the region on the CPI with scores of 71 and 63 respectively, while Syria, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt are at the bottom of the ranking.
At the international level, Denmark topped the anti-corruption index, followed by New Zealand, Finland, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands and Germany.
